Masks have been integral to African culture for centuries, with some being inspired by deities and otherworldly beings. The Grebo and Kru people of Liberia have a rich history of mask usage, with the Grebo believed to have originated from the sea and the origins of the Kru still a mystery. Some speculate that these masks were influenced by depictions of ancient sky visitors and their technology, while others suggest they were made in the likeness of gods. This war mask, featuring tubular projections that represent additional eyes, was specifically designed for intimidation and may have also been used in funeral ceremonies for fallen warriors.
