This Lega Idimu Mask was in the possession of a man initiated to the second highest degree of the Bwami organization among the Lega, a Lutumbo Lwa Yananio. Its eyes have a layer of Kaolin, and it was used on the side of the head or in ritual panels, not on the face. Its purpose was to help explain Bwami's peaceful, moderate values to those who were initiated. It also represents the connection between the living and the dead, passed from one group to another. Bwami members guarded and oversaw them. Origin Democratic Republic of Congo
